Tamsyn poured a huge amount of rose-scented bubbles into the running bathwater. She put out a clean towel and wondered whether it would be dangerous to light a candle, because Scarlett had had one in her safe coma place, so it might make her feel more at home. She wanted the bath to be perfect. She wanted everything to be perfect. She wanted her to stop thinking about Cornwall, to see that she too would adapt to this new life.

When she came out of the bathroom, Ed was halfway out of the door. He turned back.

“Oh, sorry!” he said. “I thought you were in with Scarlett. Just calling in at work.”

“Right,” she said, though for some reason she wasn’t sure she believed him. “Aren’t you off for two weeks?”

He nodded, smiling broadly. “I am, but they know about Scarlett coming home, and apparently there’s a load of patisserie with our name on it. They said they’d deliver, but I just thought I’d stretch my legs and get some sunshine.”

“Of course! Good plan. Patisserie. Brilliant. Can you pick up a few things to post to Maud? I thought that would be nice. Lots of chocolate.”

“Of course. Good idea.”

He came and kissed her, and they looked at each other for a long time and it was OK. She trusted him again. She would always trust him. They had been through this together.
